A Wolf’s Duty

A Wolf’s Duty (Love Bites)
by Jennifer T. Alli

It isn’t everyday that a werewolf finds their mate but after two hundred years of waiting Tobias is more than willing to overlook Alexandria’s humanity and bring her into a world she never knew existed.

Eager to escape her father’s brutal fists, Alex lets her instant connection to Tobias overcome her natural reserve but she quickly finds his world is no less dangerous than the one she left behind.

As secrets come to light revealing how extraordinarily different Alex truly is, will their love survive or will his duty and her differences keep them apart?

“Not now,” she muttered to herself, eyes still trained on the wolf in case it began to move again.

“Come on legs work for God’s sake! I need to get out of here before wolfie over there decides he’s hungry or the crazy psycho wakes up and tries to kill me again.”

Leaning against the wall and holding it for support, Alex managed to make it to her feet, closing her eyes as she sighed in relief. Life isn’t bad enough with Fred as a father, I have to make my university explode with foliage, be attacked by a raving lunatic and saved by a wolf. I’ve had enough excitement for a lifetime, I’m done, I’m getting out of here and then –

Her line of thought was cut short as she opened her eyes to find the body of her saviour wolf transforming into something else.

Seconds passed before a man stood in place of the wolf and an inane thought floated through her mind in the face of his transformation.

He’s wearing clothes; I would have thought he’d be naked. She blushed at the thought.

The man smiled as he began to approach her and all thought fled as her eyes rolled back and her mind went blissfully blank, the stresses of the day apparently having taken their toll.

Amazon Reviews:
  • I absolutely adored reading this book. The main characters had great chemistry and the author made it easy to fall in love with each character regardless of if they were main or not. The plot line was definitely original and I found it believable. I definitely recommend this book along with everything else this amazing author writes!!!
  • A Wolf’s Duty is truly a fantastic read. I loved it from start to finish, and that’s saying something. I’m often very critical of things that I read, but I find myself grasping at straws for something remotely negative to say about this book. Alli’s characters are well rounded individuals, and I couldn’t help but to fall in love with them. I most definitely recommend this book to anyone willing to listen to me. As I said, it’s a fantastic read.
  • This was a great story. It had me captivated from the very beginning. I couldn’t put the book down. The characters were well rounded and each unique in their own way. I am a big fan of werewolves and this story was the icing on the cake. The way she let’s the characters show their emotion is amazing, and you can tell that she’s been writing for a while. I highly recommend her to anyone.

A Wolf’s Legacy is very much a work in progress. I need to finish Submerged in Ecstasy first but as soon as I do I’ll make sure to keep you all up to date with the book’s progress.

    Hii :]
I love your works! I’ve read alot of books since I was born, so I’m kinda strict when it comes to good writing, a good story etc. Sometimes I find a good story/plot but it’s not written very well (sadly) or I find an ok or somewhat boring one that’s written very well (again: sadly), something that’s ok at both, something that’s good at both, or something that’s really good both in plot and in writing. And I think your work is of the last: really good both in plot and in writing. I’m really glad I happened to stumble upon your work on FictionPress :]
Also, I just now bought all your books of the wolf series (physical paper-book), because I know how important it is to recieve support :] (and I kinda want to read where you left off on F.P.)

Are you going to give a second round of giving out free copies of this? I recently started reading this(ok, I started today and was hooked so I didn’t do any homework at all) and was horribly sad that people had plagiarized your story and that you no longer had it up. I then saw that you were giving free copies…but the day had passed. *wail* so…maybe another time? Please? I absolutely adore your writing, and I really want to finish this and the other stories from the Love Bites Trilogy.

Hi, jenny. i would like to say i love your stories. i was getting sort of tired of all the vampire stuff and went looking for a good wolf series and found u on fictionpress and fell in love with the wolves and mates. im sorry u were plagarized over there. i loved the world u created, i always love when authors create something and i can see it clearly in my head.
u did a great job and im such a dork who gets caught up in details and it gave me something to read while i recovered from illness so thanks and i was wondering if u could answer some questions about the wolves and their society? like do they all just live in the clans in south dakota and rarely interact with humans who arn’t mates? i liked the illyanna character and she seemed so nice so i was wondering what was the reason why she was being treated so mean in her clan? was it just because elijah was a jerk or was there another reason? how is each clan structured?i know they said king/queen, nobles and lucinda said something about commoners?is it basically how the monarchys were in like medieval times? do they go to school within the clans? how do they truly feel about humans and the human world? do they work like in town or is it basically they work in their own society like the amish?I know they all have mates but do they have relationships with each other like dating before they r found or do they just wait?do they ever grow old or does everyone stop aging completely at 35?i know its silly but chloe made it seem like every female wolf was super beautiful so i was wondering were their any plain jane wolves to, or was that just chloes insecurities coming through?lol if they avoid getting their head took off do they live for eternity and if they live forever where is the grandfather tobias mentioned or elijahs dad?
LOL sorry im getting longwinded u r a great writer and i love stories that make me think about different scenarios and the wolves r interesting any answers about them would be helpful and i would appreciate it and i look forward to ur next book about the wolves. thanks and keep up the good work.

      31/03/2012 at 5:13 pm

That was quite an epic comment but I will do my best to answer as many questions as I can ^_^
      – Most wolves live within the safety of the clans but there are others who live further afield doing things that benefit the species and keep them safe.
      – Before the events of the wolf books they rarely interacted with humans outside of business matters which helped keep them well funded and secret but things have changed with young wolves spending some time being educated in the human world.
      – Ilyana was treated badly because of Elijah who secretly feared that her mate had told her what had really happened with Travis and he made the others nobles treat her as badly.
      – The nobility aspect is a tradition from a time long past where the strongest warriors became lords because they were in the best position to protect those that were weaker than them.
      – Most people work within the clan but some work further afield so that they can provide for the clans.
      – Some people date other wolves, some try and have relationships with humans that live in nearby cities until they find their mate.
      – Once they hit their prime they stop ageing and unless decapitated they’re immortal.
      – There are some wolves that are plainer than others but the instinct means that physical perfection is the norm as this ensures the survival of the species.

I think that’s all of your questions but if you have any others just let me know.

Thanks for answering! yeah it was an epic comment, hope i wasnt annoying i enjoy good stories that make me think. i appreciate the answers most wouldnt take the time. of course now i have more lol, so when u get a second:

Why was lucinda so nuts? she seemed like the crazy ex girlfriend from hell in human terms lol. did she really love tobias or was she essentially a spoiled rich girl who wanted to be queen and was mad a human got to be? and if thats the case why go after chloe, she had to know ryan would kill her?

Lucinda/Elijah seemed to look down on humans like they were less than? do alot of wolves feel like that or r most cool with them but just prefer to keep their distance?

U said elijah thought illanna knew about travis and thats why he had everyone turn on her, since her mate was dead was he involved in that?

Wolf personalities, is it essentially like humans?u can be nice, mean, hateful, crazy does it just depend on their upbringing?

how many humans were in the clans, ryan said it was more than chloe thought and tobias said it was rare for them to be mates but it did happen so was it like hundreds or a handful?

R most wolves like ur 3 in their relationships, possessive/obessive over their mates? was elijah treatment of amanda rare?im assuming wolves dont have domestic violence incidents like humans?

        R Thomas/Yvonne still around even though alex/tobias r king/queen?They r enjoying retirement? 🙂

How do the marks on their necks look?if alex was out would she need a scarf so people wouldnt notice a T and a bite mark on her neck? is it very noticeable?

Last question promise lol. How do their homes look? do nobles like ryan/sebastian live in a mini palace like how chatsworth looked in the duchess movie and they have servants who live there and work for them, like how the queen lives in her palace? and do tobias/alex live the same way just in a bigger version and everyone else live in regular homes on the estates? i picture lord/ladies like the dukes/duchesses in england, that same type of strucure? Sorry for the ramble, hope u take it as how good i find ur stories that i ask so many questions. all answers r appreciated . 🙂

    Hiya K.C.

I’m not sure if you’ve read A Wolf’s Pride but a lot of the answers to your question about Lucinda are in there ^_^

As for how the wolves view humans. Most of them are fine with them, have even fought in their wars, but they just like to keep their distance because as the hunters show some of them are downright crazy.
    – There are more than a handful of human mates but what Tobias meant was that in the grand scheme of things most wolves find mates that are wolves
    – Elijah’s treatment of Amanda was rare as wolves are aware that they only get one mate and they want to care for them. That does influence their possessive tendencies because if their mate dies they won’t be getting another one and they’ll go a little crazy.
    – Thomas and Yvonne are seeing the world and enjoying their grandchildren.
    – The marks are quite noticeable but if people saw them they would just think they were looking at a tattoo so no need for scarves unless you want one.
    – The leaders of the clans live in larger homes just because of tradition where in the past if the clans were threatened they would all move back to base to make it easier to defend themselves

Hi Jenny. thanks. i appreciate all answers, alot of authors would not take the time Cant wait to read about wyatt. once again i have more questions, hope i’m not being annoying, just when you get a second 🙂

have they always lived in south dakota/have they ever lived in another state?

since they live in south dakota and away from civilization dont the wolves get bored? we go to movies/malls/ starbucks. do they go to the nearest city for that or do they do wolf things for fun?

Ilyanna said something about the nobles making it difficult for her to access clan funds what was that about? is there like a fund anybody can access to pay their bills, was she not working?

Ilyanna said her children would come home upset from school being picked on by other wolf children/do they have their own schools within the clan?

To be isolated from humans isnt their a danger that they can become to out of touch? the younger ones will get some education among humans/ what about the older ones? U said they rarely interact with us outside of business, to stay up to date on human behavior do they watch tv/surf the internet so when they deal with us they can fit in?

R the feasts they have basically a big BBQ with singing and dancing?

When ryan was training alex and they told him clan representatives were there what did that mean?

last question promise lol, was it rare for anyone to invoke the right of challenge like lucinda did? if its to determine who is the better mate wouldnt the person already know like tobias knew about alex?

Thanks again for taking the time to answer. 🙂

      • Jennyt82

        06/05/2012 at 10:17 am

I’d say that the wolves have lived elsewhere it’s just this is where they’ve chosen to settle. The things that they enjoy doing depend on how in touch they are with their wolves. Some people enjoy doing wolfie things and others are happy to mingle with humans.

Wolves run quite a few businesses as I explained in A Wolf’s Pride and all clan members are entitled to the profits so that if they want something that they can’t get within the clans they can buy it. Wolves generally work for the clan making it self sufficient but Ilyanna wasn’t working at the time.
The wolves do have schools of their own though after A Wolf’s Pride they sent children to human school for a few years at a time (they couldn’t stay there forever not ageing properly).
Clans are big on sharing knowledge so that they don’t become out of date with what’s happening in the human world.
The feasts are essentially a big celebration so yes, singing, dancing and wolf runs.
Clan representatives are essentially the clan leader’s right hand people.
It was very rare for the right of challenge to be invoked but traditions are hard to get rid of.

Hi, jenny! thanks so much for answering. Your answers are interesting. Anticipating your story about wyatt. Of course i have more questions lol, so when you get a sec.: 🙂

What exactly do the leaders of the clans do day to day? sebastian said he does paperwork, ryan does public appearances. what are those appearances? do they keep law & order in the clans? Solve disputes? visit people?

Just because you are mated, does that necessarily mean both parties will be faithful? anna came off as sort of flirty with sebastian in the beginning, i thought that was weird considering she had a mate. could the woman cheat if she wanted?

Does each clan run differently, have different rules? when ilyanna got there tobias said she and alex could learn the royal clan ways together. did he mean just learning how that clan operated?

All communities have “bad seeds” so to speak. do the wolves? law breakbreakers, trouble makers, criminal types?

wolves can’t get sick right? even though alex, chloe are mated since they are human could they still catch a really bad illness?

You said clan reps. r the right hands of the leaders. what do they do? do they handle problems, help run things and report back to the lords who report to the king? the clans are basically a hiarchy system, am i right?

Is there a wall around each clan? wouldnt that be the only way to keep humans out?

What is something a wolf would have to go into the human world to purchase that the clans don”t have?

How big is each clan, i mean would you know everyone in the clan or is it so big that some would be strangers?

one of the funniest things in the stories was how you said everyone was so gossipy. were the royals, nobles the celebrities of the wolf clans and get gossiped about like human celebrities/royals?

All answers r appreciated and again thanks for answering reader questions 🙂
